The FIA World Endurance Championship (WEC) and European Le Mans Series (ELMS) racing is both exhilarating and accessible, in contrast to Formula 1, some commentators assert.
All of the Petrolheads Welcome team were at Silverstone for 2018’s WEC 6 Hours Race to see the heady mixture of Le Mans Prototype machines racing alongside their GT cousins. Whilst there’s no competition across the classes, there’s plenty of competition within the four classes on track.
Seeing Jenson Button and Fernando Alonso on the same starting grid was a crowd-pleaser. As was seeing Jenson walking around the fairground area without being hassled too much. That sort of mutual respect between drivers and fans can only make these kinds of race meetings even more attractive (in my view).
The race card also included Formula 3 in a form that’s drawing to a close after many years of bringing through rookie racers on their way to Formula 1 stardom. We look forward to seeing how that develops.
This year we stayed at the De Vere Horwood Estate Hotel.
Here are a few images and a short film of our 2018 experience to whet your appetite for 2019’s races, be they at Silverstone, Spa, Le Mans, etc.
