We can’t resist a pub/hotel whose website has a dedicated classic cars section and includes the phrase “In addition to managing The Fat Lamb Hotel for almost forty years, I have more recently been able to indulge my other great passion – owning, maintaining and driving Classic Cars.”
Lots of car clubs meet there and owner Paul Bonsall is very active in car events and car-related charity work (the Sporting Bears). Here’s a summary of Paul’s conversation with us:

OK, so the room was clean. The food was plentiful, the breakfast excellent. And it’s in a great spot, with lovely views and fabulous driving – specially on almost empty roads at the time of our visit. Lots of car related memorabilia to prove the owner’s petrolhead pedigree BUT if he was the morose non-communicative individual who ‘greeted’ us, then my guess is he only bothers to engage if you have actually turned up in a classic. We didn’t, we’d left ours at home on this occasion, although we had told him we’d booked his place because of his Petrolheads listing. As for the room; certainly clean and possibly recently decorated, but the WC seat was loose, the wardrobe door wouldn’t close properly and rattled such that we ended up wedging it with a towel and next door’s TV was either on far too loud or the walls are paper thin. I think the latter. The bed was rock solid, so if you’re thinking of driving the next day beware – you’ll get no sleep! I’m sure this place is fabulous as a lunch stop on a rally/tour or a drive in the country, and great for car club meets. But I couldn’t possibly recommend an overnight stay.
Having spent two weekends here with our car club I can honestly say that this is some of the best driving country in the UK. Add to that a very welcoming host, good beer, decent food, and great value it is about time you guys paid a visit and upgraded this to Gold! Paul is great company and always willing to help out with route planning and recommend places of interest.
Great pub in the middle of nowhere, quiet, tranquil, safe parking, good beer and homely food – what’s not to like! Dave (via iPad)
